Second Life

Second Life is a virtual world, a three-dimensional application that allows user to live a second life. It has to be downloaded to the computer and after designing the avatar, Second Live allows to navigate in a virtual social network that is mainly developed by the users themselves. Second Life was conceived as an exchange forum, and offers companies and institutions to settle themselves in it and learn out of the user's behavior and will. The application has its own economic system and a virtual currency that can be exchanged for real cash: the Linden dollar (the name comes from the U.S. company that created Second Life in 2003.

The fiasco

The fiasco of Second Life is mainly due to the way it works. An application to be downloaded and installed leaves out of it the people who will not or can not do this process. It also makes it impossible to access it from any computer connected to Internet. Moreover, the complexity of its operation and of its initial tutorial causes rejection among users.

What have we learnt out of it?

Applications, games and social networks must evolve with time. At first, a downloadable Second Life made sense, but currently it has become obsolete if compared to competitors on the Internet, accessible just a click away. One has to make it easy to achieve success.
