RIM (Blackberry) has been the leading company in the mobile market. A company that has amassed 70 million customers after an spectacular growth.
Its flagship product is its messaging system. The very fact that it is proprietary and the "security" that this brings, is the main selling point of RIM over all its competitors.
In October 2011 the messaging system collapsed and it took several days to recover the service. RIM already suffered similar falls in 2008 and 2009 but none of this caliber. Apparently the volume of messages handled is so high that a brief stop soon created a "plug" difficult to solve without losing messages.
The problem is going to cost more than $ 50 million in compensation. All this adds up to a fall in its stock value ($ 70 to 17) in just seven months under pressure from Android and iPhone.
What can we learn?
Success is a transient state. Be aware of this and enjoy the moment when we are at the top. Who PALM longer remembers, the previous market leader, the company that created a new category of product and fidelizó to millions of executives worldwide.
